Born 14th April 1884 and spent the early part of his life in South Africa where, besides occupying various positions in business, he served for about two and a half years with the Rand Rifles and the Durham Light Infantry. He came to Argentina in 1906, where he served the Buenos Ayres & Pacific Railway until he joined the Central Argentine Railway in September 1909. He was then employed in the Carriage & Wagon Department at Rosario, where his father held a responsible position. In October, 1914, Fairbairn volunteered for active service and proceeded to England and enlisted in the Sheffield City Battalion of the York and Lancashire Regiment, in which corps he subsequently received a commission. Shortly afterwards he was drafted to France where he was severly wounded in both feet by shrapnel in 1917. During convalescence, he married, and later went to India, where he served at Peshawar and Dacen during the campaign on the Afghan frontier of 1919. He was demobilized in 1919 with the rank of Lieutenant, and after a few months' leave in England, he returned to Argentina at the end of March 1920 on the Highland Pride to begin work at the Chief Mechanical Engineer's office in Rosario. The state of his health due to his wounds, however, was so serious that he had to be immediately admitted to the British Hospital in Buenos Aires, was operated, and died on the afternoon of the 21st April 1920. He was buried in the British Cememetry at Chacarita. He figures on the memorial at St Bartholomew Church in Rosario. http://www.argbrit.org/structure/SantaFe_intro.html
