History of the Argentine-British Community

Though the ABCC was founded in 1939, the Argentine-British Community has a long history going back hundreds of years. Below you will find a number of links to some of the resources available online. This is not a final list, if you have have further suggestions, please contact us.

• The Bulletin, the ABCC’s magazine, has been around since 1940 recording the long and eventful history of the Argentine-British community, helping to keep us fully informed on the many aspects of Community activities and entertained with the numerous articles of literary and cultural nature.  The past issues, since 2017, are available online. 

• The Bulletin has published articles linked to the history of the Argentine-British community. A full index is available for all of those published online. 

• A list of past ABCC chairmen of the ABCC is also available.

• British Settlers in Argentina and Uruguay—studies in 19th and 20th century emigration: an indexed collection of records from Argentina documenting the presence of British and other English-speaking residents. Records include baptisms, marriages, deaths and burials from the Anglican, Scots Presbyterian and Methodist churches, transcripts from the National Archives in Buenos Aires and London, Argentine census returns and contemporary publications.

• English Speaking Scholastic Association of the River Plate (ESSARP): a brief history 

• Special Collections and Archives, Universidad de San Andrés. Collects, organises and preserves documents belonging to individuals, institutions and companies, especially those related to the history of the British and Irish communities in Argentina. It provides free access to the academic community and users, preserving this heritage for future generations. 

• Asociación Argentina de Cultura Inglesa Library. The British Cultural Library, with hundreds of English language books, and the National Resource Centre, specialised in English language and teaching, are both open to the public. 

• South American Genealogy Database: a database of 30,000 British people, all of whom spent part of their lives in South America.
